Josef Allen Hynek (Dr. Hynek) is one of the most important figures in the history of UFO research. Originally an astronomer, he was hired by the U.S. Air Force to serve as a scientific consultant for Project Blue Book.

Initially, Hynek was a thorough skeptic, believing that 99% of UFO reports could be explained by conventional phenomena. But as his research deepened, he discovered a small fraction of cases that were simply inexplicable.

Hynek created the classification system still in use today:

Classification	Description
First Kind	Night lights / Daylight discs
Second Kind	Radar + visual confirmation simultaneously
Third Kind	Sighting of alien beings
Fourth Kind	Abduction by alien beings
Fifth Kind	Direct communication with alien beings

Scientific Contributions

In 1972, Hynek published The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry, the first book to analyze UFOs using scientific methods. He also famously said:

“UFO research is not pseudoscience. But if a scientist publicly studies UFOs, his career is over.”
