🔥 You think UFOs only started in the 20th century? African ancestors saw them long ago.
When we talk about UFO history, we naturally think of 1947 Roswell, the 1950s Project Blue Book, or the testimonies of US Air Force pilots. It’s all very “Western-centric”—as if aliens are only interested in Americans.
But the truth is: In African indigenous oral traditions, records of “Fire Visitors” date back centuries. And these descriptions are strikingly consistent with modern UAP sighting reports.
The person who brought African UFO oral history to the world stage is the Zulu elder, healer (Sangoma), and wisdom keeper—Credo Vusamazulu Mutwa (1921–2020).
👴 Who is Credo Mutwa?
Credo Mutwa was born in 1921 into a Zulu family in the Natal region of South Africa. He was not only a traditional healer (Sangoma) but also revered as a High Sanusi—the highest level of wisdom keeper in the tribe. He dedicated his life to collecting, preserving, and transmitting the oral history and mythology of the Zulu and other African peoples.
Mutwa published several books, including Indaba, My Children and Song of the Stars, and established cultural villages across South Africa as “living museums” to preserve indigenous knowledge. His knowledge system integrated African traditional religion, Zulu culture, and his claimed personal experiences with extraterrestrial contact.
In 2001, he was invited to Australia to speak at the International Conference on Extraterrestrial Intelligence, presenting on the records of extraterrestrial intelligent life in African traditions.
🔥 Abahambi Abavutoyo — The Fire Visitors
In Zulu, Abahambi Abavutoyo means “Fire Visitors” or “Travelers of Fire.” This term is used to describe luminous objects that fly across the night sky—what we modernly call UFOs.
According to Mutwa’s accounts, African indigenous peoples had contact with these “Fire Travelers” and the beings inside them long before Europeans encountered the UFO phenomenon. In his recorded testimony for the Artangel Witness Project, he said:
“These objects you call UFOs that fly across the night sky, we in Africa call them Abahambi Abavutoyo—Fire Visitors. Long before the rest of the world heard of these things, we Africans had contact with these things and the beings inside them.”
This testimony was included in the Witness project by the UK arts organization Artangel—a cross-cultural archival initiative collecting global UFO sighting reports and indigenous testimonies.

👽 Mutende-ya-ngenge — The Greyish-White Entities
If “Fire Visitors” evoke UFO craft, then Mutende-ya-ngenge directly corresponds to the Grey Aliens of modern popular culture.
Mutwa’s description of Mutende-ya-ngenge is as follows:
- Appearance: Grey or white beings with large heads, chalk-white faces, and large green eyes. Their eyes go all the way around their heads, so they can look at you over their shoulders.
- Behavior: These beings capture humans, cut them open, then close them back up, and make them forget what happened.
- Memory Recovery: Only through entering a trance or hypnotic state can victims recall their abduction experience.
Does this sound familiar? This description is almost identical to the “Grey Aliens” in thousands of modern alien abduction reports—large heads, almond-shaped eyes, memory suppression, mysterious medical examinations.
Mutwa’s Personal Experience
Mutwa claimed to have been abducted by Mutende-ya-ngenge himself:
“I was abducted once by beings as small as dolls. They paralyzed me, then inserted instruments into my nostrils and examined me painfully. A female entity seduced me, but it felt cold and very uncomfortable, like being violated. Then I found myself back in the bush. When I approached the village, all the dogs rushed to attack me, and I had to be rescued. Only later did I learn I had been missing for three days.”
This experience—memory loss, time jumps, physical examinations, hostile reactions from dogs—perfectly matches the classic elements found in thousands of alien abduction reports worldwide.
🦎 More Extraterrestrial Entities in Zulu Legends
Mutwa’s worldview includes not only Fire Visitors and Greyish-White entities but also various other alien beings, forming a complex cosmology:
| Name | Description | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Chitauri (Mantindane) | Reptilian entities that landed on Earth 7,000 years ago, manipulating human civilization and establishing royal bloodlines | ⚠️ Hostile |
| Mvonjina | Three-foot-tall beings, messengers of the gods, bringing knowledge to humanity | ✨ Friendly |
| Muhondoruka | Violent alien beings specializing in abductions and experiments | ⚠️ Hostile |
| Nafu | Entities that mate with African women | ✨ Neutral |
| Mbembi / Sikasa | Friendly extraterrestrial beings | ✨ Friendly |
This classification system shows that in the indigenous African view, the universe is not a simple binary of “Earth vs. Aliens,” but rather a complex cosmos filled with various intelligent life forms—some good, some evil, some high, some low—interacting with humanity to varying degrees.
🔄 Striking Similarities with Modern UFO Descriptions
| African Oral Tradition | Modern UFO/UAP Phenomenon |
|---|---|
| Abahambi Abavutoyo — Luminous flying objects in the night sky | Common luminous orbs and triangular craft in modern UFO/UAP sightings |
| Mutende-ya-ngenge — Large head, green eyes, greyish-white skin | ”Grey Aliens” commonly described in modern alien abduction reports |
| Memory erased after abduction, only recalled under hypnosis | Modern “Missing Time” phenomenon—victims recall abductions under hypnosis |
| Cutting people open for examination then closing them back up | Anesthetized Abductions—victims find mysterious scars or implants on their bodies |
| Hostile reactions from animals (especially dogs) after abduction | Abnormal animal behavior commonly reported in UFO sightings |
| Chitauri — Manipulating royal bloodlines, controlling human development | ”Reptilian control of human society” conspiracy theories (David Icke) |
🏛️ The Artangel Witness Project Record
Witness is a unique project commissioned by the UK arts organization Artangel, curated by artist Susan Hiller. The project’s goal was to collect UFO sighting reports from around the world, especially including testimonies from non-Western and indigenous communities.
The project is divided into 10 “zones” by region:
- Africa
- Asia
- Australia and Oceania 4–5. Various European regions
- France, Canada, Switzerland
- Portugal and Brazil
- Spain and Latin America
- United Kingdom
- United States
The first testimony in the Africa zone (number 01.04) is the recording of Credo Mutwa.
This method of recording is important—it places indigenous oral testimonies on an equal footing with Western sighting reports, acknowledging that different cultures have their own understandings and naming systems for the UFO phenomenon.
🤔 Why Has African UFO History Been Overlooked by the Mainstream?
1. Colonial History and Knowledge Hegemony
African oral traditions have long been marginalized by Western academia. During the colonial period, Europeans dismissed indigenous African myths, legends, and cosmologies as “primitive superstitions,” failing to take seriously the possible historical memories they might contain.
2. Lack of Written Records
Unlike Europe and the United States, many African cultural traditions are passed down orally through generations. These oral histories are difficult for mainstream UFO research to accept as “reliable evidence.” But in fact, the stability and accuracy of oral traditions are far higher than commonly assumed—especially in cultures with strict systems of transmission.
3. Imbalance in Research Resources
Currently, the vast majority of global UFO research resources and attention are concentrated in the United States, Europe, and some Asian countries. African UFO reports and indigenous testimonies rarely receive serious investigation or international media coverage. Even when they do (e.g., the 1994 Zimbabwe Ariel School UFO incident), it’s only because Western investigators were involved that it gained attention.
4. The Controversy Surrounding Credo Mutwa
Mutwa’s extraterrestrial views were influenced by figures like David Icke (the lizard conspiracy theory), causing his narratives to be labeled as “occult” or “New Age” in academic and mainstream ufology circles. But the question is—an African traditional elder’s knowledge system can be “contaminated” by David Icke, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing genuine in it. African indigenous alien legends predate modern Western UFO culture by far.
5. Racial Bias
Let’s not deny it—the field of UFO research, from its inception to the present, has been dominated by white men. The testimony of an African black elder naturally faces more scrutiny and skepticism in this circle. Compared to a report from a white American pilot, his credibility is often underestimated.
💡 Conclusion: A Forgotten Cosmic Dialogue
The oral traditions of the Zulu people offer a precious perspective—the existence of extraterrestrial intelligent life has never been an exclusive discovery of the modern Western world. Hundreds of years ago, and possibly even earlier, African indigenous peoples were already recording and understanding these visitors from the sky in their own languages and worldviews.
Credo Mutwa passed away in 2020 at the age of 98. He took with him a generation of African cosmic wisdom. But his testimony has been preserved by projects like the Artangel Witness Project, becoming an important clue for us to re-examine the global UFO phenomenon.
Next time you think of UFOs, remember this Zulu word:
Abahambi Abavutoyo — Fire Visitors.
They may have been here all along; we just never listened properly to the stories of Africa’s ancestors.
